It is membership renewal time for the National Arborists Association of Australia. Currently, our membership continues to hold over 100 members from around the country comprising of Arborists throughout all facets of the industry from private companies, local government, educational institutions and other concerned parties.

Our members continue to enjoy the benefits of Australia’s only qualification based association. The board of the National Arborists Association have found it necessary to make changes to membership requirements that will come into play for the renewal of 2009/10 memberships. (Please note that the changes do not affect this current renewal year).

At our Board meeting of 2 May 2008 a discussion and subsequent motion was adopted in relation to meeting our obligation as an association to provide the community with quality tree care and management across Australia. Recently much debate has been raised about national licensing or accreditation or the lack of such within the arboricultural industry.

While it is accepted that we have an Australian Qualification Framework for education encompassing Certificates 2 – 5 in Arboriculture, it is noted that all other recognised trades and professions have requirements for licensing that encompass some type of continued education requirement. These various systems require a points system that records a minimum amount of continued training and education undertaken. This then forms a renewal requirement for a license or membership each year.

Many would be familiar with the old MOPs system that NAAA previously required for membership renewal each year. The new adopted motion has in a way re-introduced an old requirement. These changes will affect all membership categories and will assist in demonstrating that our industry is regulating itself in line with other trades and professions and ensures that our members are keeping up to date with new scientific and technological advances.

It is appreciated that keeping your CEU points up to date can sometimes be tricky, so the board have made it easier for members to track their points with a personal record sheet available from the NAAA website.

Start earning your CEU points this year to allow membership renewal for 2009/10 and join us at the NAAA educational meetings scheduled during the remainder of this year.
